The State Labor Government has delivered a new raised pedestrian crossing on Barkly Street in Ararat, improving safety and accessibility for people walking in the heart of the CBD.
Member for Ripon Martha Haylett, along with Ararat Rural City Council Mayor Bob Sanders, today officially opened the new crossing, marking an important milestone in improving pedestrian safety and accessibility in Ararat.
Delivered by Ararat Rural City Council with funding from the Victorian Government, the upgrade replaces the existing signalised crossing with a raised design that helps slow traffic and prioritise pedestrians in one of the town’s busiest areas.
The project forms part of a broader program focused on delivering small-to-medium, high-benefit pedestrian safety upgrades at priority locations across Victoria, applying Safe System principles such as lower speeds, improved separation from traffic, and better protection for people walking near shops, schools and public transport.
The new raised crossing makes it easier and safer for people of all ages and abilities to move around Barkly Street, while continuing to support access to local businesses and services in the CBD.
The Victorian Government is continuing its investment in safer, more accessible streets in regional communities, ensuring towns like Ararat remain vibrant, connected and pedestrian friendly.
