The State Labor Government is improving safety for pedestrians and other road users at the intersection of the Pyrenees Highway, High Street and Inkerman Street in Maryborough.

This project is being funded as part of the Australian Government Black Spot Program.

The Pyrenees Highway runs through Maryborough, connecting the regional towns of Ararat, Maryborough and Castlemaine to the Calder Freeway. There is currently a roundabout located at this intersection.

Between January 2017 and December 2025 there were 8 crashes at this intersection, one including the death of a pedestrian.

These works are designed to improve safety by installing raised safety platforms (wombat crossings) on all legs of the intersection, slowing vehicles approaching the intersection and providing a safe crossing opportunity for pedestrians.

In addition to raised safety platforms, we will also be completing kerb and drainage works, as well as improved signage and line marking.

As part of this project, there will be changes to some access and car-parking arrangements near the roundabout.

To improve safe access to the Shell Ready petrol station located on the north-eastern corner of the roundabout, its number of access points will be reduced from three to two. This has been discussed with the owner of the petrol station and written acknowledgement provided.

Three car parking spaces will also be permanently removed on the south-east corner of the intersection on the Pyrenees Highway, outside Paul Tidyman Automotives. This is required to enable vehicles to pass others who are turning into the service station across the road and avoid queuing at the intersection.

A full closure of the intersection at Pyrenees Highway, High Street and Inkerman Street will be in place for 4 weeks from Monday 10 August. Closing the intersection will reduce the overall construction timeframe.
