The future is looking bright for Newlyn’s future sports stars thanks to works starting on new oval lighting
at Newlyn Recreation Reserve, backed by the Allan Labor Government.

Member for Ripon Martha Haylett today joined Hepburn Shire Council Mayor, Cr Brian Hood and
members of the Newlyn Cats Football Netball Club to officially launch the works, made possible by more
than $185,000 from the Country Football and Netball Program.

The Newlyn Recreation Reserve is the town’s sport and recreation hub and is a hive of activity all year
round supporting more than 250 participants, including the Newlyn Cricket Club.

Works will install new 100 lux LED lighting towers with upgraded cabling, power supply and switchboard
to bring the oval up to competition-standard for Australian Football.

The new lighting promises to be a game-changer for the Cats, giving them opportunities to host evening
training and games, while further expanding their programs and getting even more people involved in
sport.

The Country Football and Netball Program is a partnership with the AFL, AFL Victoria, and Netball
Victoria. More than $37.5 million has been invested in more than 560 projects across the state since
2005.

The Victorian Budget 2023/24 is providing more than $213 million to deliver and improve community
sports infrastructure and support initiatives that boost participation and inclusion in local sport. The
funding is part of $1.9 billion invested in community sport and recreation infrastructure since 2014.

Martha Haylett MP acknowledged Hepburn Shire Council for its investment of $60,000 and commitment
to delivering the project, and the Newlyn Football Netball Club for its support and contribution of
$60,000.
